A total of 50 refugees from Syria and Iraq, who are currently staying at the municipal camp at Souda in Chios island, are continuing with their hunger strike. So far, two of the hunger strikers had to receive medical attention.
The hunger strikers are demanding information regarding their future after the implementation of the EUTurkey agreement, the implementation of the international regulations for protection and the relocation program to Europe and North America. In addition, they request for the speed up of the evaluation procedure for asylum requests.
The Municipal Council of Chios, declared in a voting that “it understands completely the reasons that led dozens of the refugees who are being accommodated on the island to the ultimate mean of hunger strike in order to claim their rights.” The voting also comments that “despite the efforts of the local community and authorities to ameliorate their living conditions, the refugees have been abandoned to their own devices and have no legal update or information provided.”
