The Greek language, one of the oldest European languages, has an oral tradition of 4,000 years and a written tradition of 3,000 years. Naturally, with so much history, the Greek language has influenced so many others. Based on the premise that words are linked to thoughts which, by extension, are linked to prosperity, the time has come to pay the Greeks back for origin of words through the creation of the Word Debt platform.
Bearing in mind that the financial crisis has led to 45 percent cuts in education spending as well as school closures, Word Debt has been developed so that Greeks can get money for the words they loan out. The platform is linked to Facebook, Twitter and social media. By hooking up your social media accounts to Word Debt, you have the option of donating 0.10 euros per word that goes directly to the charity, “The Smile of the Child,” a large Greek NGO related to children’s welfare.
Needless to say, countless of Greeks around the world have embraced the concept, including writer/actress Nia Vardalos of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.”
As for the other debt, you can watch it rise and fall each second through the National Debt Clock.
