Athens and Epidaurus Festival Program Unveiled: Edgy, Political and Youthful

EPID
Greece’s major cultural event, the 61st Athens and Epidaurus Festival, is full of youth this year with 80 performances at a number of venues from mid-June to mid-August this year. Events take place at the little and large Epidaurus theater, the Herod Atticus Theater and the industrial buildings at 260 Pireos Street.
Prepared in just five weeks after the resignation of Belgian multidisciplinary artist Jan Fabre who caused public uproar when he presented a Belgian-based program. Vangelis Theodoropoulos has now taken over as artistic director with a low-key program with few large names but a focus on youthfulness and trends to come. The key word is “political,” with a program that pretty much reflects the times. All up there are numerous theatrical works, 20 music concerts, 10 dance performances, visual arts exhibitions, performance lectures. There will also be a special tribute to William Shakespeare on the quadricentennial since his death.
