Greek Cooking Classes at a Taverna in Athens

athens-cooking-with-maria-In Greece there is never a shortage of unique activities for tourists to try out. One way to dabble in the local culture is to try out a cooking class at a local taverna.
During this unique opportunity of participating in a 3-hour small-group cooking class at a tavern in Athens, one learns how to prepare favorite “spitiko” or homemade dishes from a passionate and professional Greek chef.
brushing-egg-wash-on-spanakotiropitaThe dishes prepared are colorful and inspired by the Mediterranean lifestyle from the Greek islands and mainland. The chef teaches students the soulful meanings and traditions behind classic Greek cuisine focusing on a variety of local dishes depending on the season. Typically, dishes such as melitazanopitakia (eggplant pies), roasted lamb, tzatziki and Greek salad are on the menu. Or one might find a lesson about fresh shellfish and classic flavorings such as lemon, cinnamon and oregano.
After you meet the chef and your fellow food-lovers, the lesson starts off with a glass of raki (twice-distilled Greek spirit), which is sure to loosen ones inhibitions. The class is limited to around 14 people, so one is sure to have individualized attention as the authentic Greek feast is prepared by the group.
Together the group prepares and cooks an authentic meal consisting of four starters and one main course, using fresh herbs and spices. After the meal is complete, the group enjoys a sit down meal with a glass of wine, chatting and reaping the fruits of their labor and their scrumptious creations.
