National Gardens Shut Down Ahead of Greek Govt Vote on Pension-Tax Reform

The gates of the National Gardens of Athens were shut down on Friday and all entry points to the grounds will remain closed until Monday. The unprecedented closure of the gardens, near Greek Parliament, has prompted the anger of citizens groups and social media users.
The decision to restrict entry to the large park was made ahead of planned protests by the All Workers Militant Front (PAME) and in anticipation of public outrage due to a debate in Greek Parliament on an overhaul to the Greek social security and tax system that is to be sealed during a voting session late on Sunday.
On Friday, PAME protestors separated themselves in groups of three to four people and managed to pass through police forces guarding Maximos Mansion, where the official seat of left-led SYRIZA Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is located. Some protestors arrived via Herod Atticus Street through the National Gardens, others arrived via Vas. Sofias Avenue, whereas the more daring trudged through Rigillis Street by crossing Vas. Georgiou Street.
