Greek Female Theoretical Physicist Amongst the Top in the World

Greek physicist Asimina Arvanitaki, who is considered as one of the top up-and-coming researchers in the world, specifically in the field of Theoretical Physics, was named the inaugural Stavros Niarchos Foundation Aristarchus Chair in Theoretical Physics at the Waterloo, Ontario based center in Canada.

The Greek-born theoretical physicist received an $8-million research chair at the Perimeter Institute, which was established in 1999 and is considered the most advanced research center in theoretical physics in the world. Half of the grant is sponsored by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, whereas the rest is sponsored by the Institute.

Arvanitaki will spend her five-year term advancing her own work and contributing to education and training for young people in Greece. Apart from being one of the first female researchers to have earned such a prestigious position, Arvanitaki is a pioneer of research in supersymmetry, dark matter, and extra dimensions.

“She has a rare talent, which is necessary today more than ever, as we are on the threshold of revolutionary advances,” says Neil Turok, Director at the Perimeter Institute.
