UN Spokesman: Cyprus Talks Are Going Well

Cyprus-UnCyprus talks are going well “last we heard,” a UN Secretary General spokesman has said, adding however that he would refrain from making predictions.
“Finding a settlement in Cyprus should not be like when one talks about 60% or 70% of things,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said when asked to comment on whether it is estimated that there is a 60% chance that a settlement could be reached in Cyprus.
“The Secretary General’s Special Envoy Espen Barth Eide is continuing with the discussions,” he pointed out.
Last we heard, he added, “the discussions were going well.”
“When we are ready to announce something, we will, but we will refrain from making predictions,” Dujarric said.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN led talks resumed in May last year aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof.
