Cyprus and Bulgaria to Further Enhance their Cultural Cooperation

Further enhancement of the regional cooperation in the fields of culture and development was discussed and joint actions have been agreed between Cyprus and Bulgaria. The two countries decided on Friday to include a Cypriot cultural week in Bulgaria and a Bulgarian cultural week in Cyprus.
The decision was taken on Friday in the framework of a meeting between Education and Culture Minister Costas Kadis and the Minister of Culture of Bulgaria Vedhi Rashidov, at the latter’s suggestion.
Kadis said that the Cypriot side had proposed that the Cypriot cultural week in Bulgaria would be organized within the framework of Pafos 2017 European Capital of Culture.
Furthermore, the two countries reviewed their cultural relations, described by the Education and Culture Minister as excellent, adding that the two countries had signed a cooperation agreement covering cultural issues last June.
Kadis noted that the role which European countries can play in addressing common challenges concerning the preservation of cultural heritage, had also been discussed. Furthermore, they two into how to further develop cultural cooperation between the two countries, as well as the prospects of cooperation and the possible signing of an agreement regarding the cinema sector. Kadis noted that Bulgaria has developed infrastructure in this field in which Cyprus is interested.
He thanked Rashidov for the invitation extended to him to visit Bulgaria “with a view to further enhance cultural cooperation among the two countries.”
In his statements, via an interpreter, Rashidov noted that a new page has opened for Bulgaria-Cyprus cooperation, adding that both countries have an ancient civilization and culture. He stated that both states have many talented young artists who could become known in other countries as well, adding that “we can close the page of isolation and open a European page.”
Furthermore, he referred to the need of Cyprus and Bulgaria to get to know each other’s theatrical culture, and noted the rich cultural heritage of both countries.
