Uruguayan football coach, Gustavo Poyet, was fired by AEK on Tuesday, one day before the team would face Atromitos in the first game ever since the Greek Cup commenced again.
AEK owner, Dimitris Melissanidis, labelled Poyet as “immoral,” after the coach announced to the Greek media that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season.
Press reports said that Poyet’s announcement displeased AEK chiefs, as they were not aware of the fact beforehand.
“What he did was unacceptable, it was not the appropriate time to unsettle the team just hours before the semi-final,” Melissanidis told reporters.
Former AEK and Greek international, Stelios Manolas will take over on an interim basis.
AEK will face Atromitos on April 20 and on April 26 at the semi-finals of the Greek Cup.
