Greek authorities say that thousands of migrants and refugees who are camped at Piraeus port have two weeks notice to move to hot-spots and accommodation centers voluntarily; if not, they will be expelled by force.
The warning was issued on Thursday April 8, as more than 4,000 refugees and migrants stranded at Piraeus port refuse to move to organized shelters.
The operation to evacuate Piraeus port, one of Greece’s most important port stops that links Athens with many touristic destinations and vacation islands, aims to prevent any problems regarding the augmented touristic traffic that is expected during Easter.
“Every effort will be exhausted to persuade refugees and immigrants that it is in their own interest for them to move,” a Greek coast guard said to AP. “There is a 10-15 days timeframe for them to leave the port.”
As of March 20, since the EU-Turkey agreement has been in effect, Athens has toughened its position regarding the refugee and migrant issue. The deportations to Turkey started as of Monday April 4 and are expected to resume Friday.
