The hijacking that diverted an EgyptAir flight to Cyprus and threatened passenger lives, it turns out is a desperate move of a man to contact his Cypriot ex-wife.
The plane took off from Alexandria, it was hijacked and landed at Larnaca. The hijacker, said he was strapped with explosives, a statement that was not true according to Cypriot authorities.
The hijacker’s only known demand was to deliver a letter to his Cypriot former wife.
The woman who is a resident of Oroklini, Cyprus was transferred to the Larnaca airport to meet her former husband.
Most passengers and crew have been freed and the hijacker remains on the plane with seven hostages.
Although the incident initially alerted authorities fearing a terrorism act it turns out the ex-wife might be the key for ending this.
