Greece Must Make Its Energy Sector More Competitive: European Commission Vice-President for Energy Union

Energy1European Commission Vice-President for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič said that energy is a key ingredient in the bailout program and essential to the bailout review.
Speaking to Capital.gr, Mr. Šefčovič said that the European Commission is pleased with the progress made in Greece, but there is still a need for the country’s energy sector to become more competitive and more efficient.
The Vice President for Energy Union also said that the Greek government should proceed with the further privatization of the Electric Company DEH and said that Greece can play a key role in the EU’s energy strategy.
In addressing the question of natural gas as a major alternative at a time when Greece is facing a dire financial situation, the Vice President for the European Commission said that the Energy Union aims to improve infrastructure and energy links among EU member states and to ensure that all member states will have access to natural gas hubs through various financing means.
Specifically, the aim of the Energy Union, underlined Mr. Šefčovič, is for every EU member state, including Greece, to have access to at least three different sources of natural gas.
In this context, he noted that the interconnector Greece-Bulgaria is one among seven major projects that has been designated as a project of top priority and the European Commission is in close touch with all parties involved to ensure that the construction of the interconnector is completed in a timely fashion.
