German Finance Ministry: Greece’s Debt Crisis and Refugee Problem are Different Areas of Policy

Afghan Migrants_FYROMFriederike von Tiesenhausen, Head of the Press Division, Spokesperson for Germany’s Federal Ministry of Finance, said today that Greece must oblige with whatever has been agreed regarding the new bailout program, underlying that Greece’s debt crisis and the refugee crisis constitute two entirely different policy areas.
“You are confusing the two areas of policy,” responded Ms. von Tiesenhausen to a question on whether Greece’s debt issue and its refugee crisis are interrelated in terms of EU’s approach towards Greece.
Ms. von Tiesenhausen went on to say that there are plans under way at the EU level to provide assistance to Greece for its refugee crisis, but there is at the same time a new bailout program in place which must be executed according to the terms already agreed by the Greek government and its official creditors.
She also added that Greece’s official creditors are aware of the need for Greece to return to private credit markets and this is what they are working on in terms of the goals and aims of the new bailout program.
In the meantime,, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that “Greece cannot be left alone with the problem,” referring to its refugee crisis.
Merkel said she is in support of European solutions which do not put unnecessary pressure on one country, but she is also against the sealing off EU’s external borders.
