German Press: Idomeni and Victoria Square, Images of Shame

Idomeni and Victoria square are the two main areas that the European Union is focusing on and drawing its conclusions regarding Greece’s bad management of the refugee and migrant issue, according to the German Press.
The photo depicting refugees trying to tear down the barbed wire fence amidst a cloud of teargas in order to pass to the FYROM side, adorns the front pages of most newspapers. “Athens is losing control of the refugees” is the headline that accompanies the photo in the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.  “The FYROM police used teargas against refugees and migrants who were trying to tear down the fence at the border,” the article notes and  further describes the scenario as “sad images.”
A reporter from Südwest Presse wonders what will happen if the refugees try again to break the border fence. “Will they put them in prison? Will there be a bloodshed of unarmed in the heart of Europe? An answer to all of these questions must be given by all those who for many weeks now say that the global issue of refugees is not solved by closing the national borders.”
Landeszeitung newspaper from Lüneburg turns against Europe. “Those images should make everybody feel ashamed, if any of them see the old continent as a land of prosperity.”
The other “side” of the drama is happening in Athens, in Victoria Square, which used to be a hangout for junkies, prostitutes and immigrants from Eastern Europe. The “local population” is now replaced by the refugees. The reporter from Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, was there and wrote a piece, in which he describes that in “the Greece of crisis” several people are making a fortune. However, the German reporter quotes a Syrian refugee in his piece, who says that he came to Athens through Esmir and Chios island, and now he is trapped in Victoria square. “Had I known that FYROM would close, I would have never came,” he admits to the German journalist.
