Greek Supreme Court Prosecutor Asks for Implementation of Flagrante Delicto Procedure Against Protesting Farmers

prosecutor_Greek_farmersThe prosecutor of The Court of Cassation, the supreme court of Greece for civil and criminal law, has asked for the implementation of the procedure of flagrante delicto against Greek farmers who continue to protest and block the nation’s major highways.
Citing article 292 of Greek Penal Law, which refers to the obstruction of transport, Supreme Court prosecutor Efterpi Kotzamani has sent a memo to regional public prosecutors reminding them of their responsibility to enforce the law, with the use of police authorities, against those who prevent the effective use of roads and bridges for public purposes.
In the meantime, the Greek Communist Party has issued an announcement with which it warns the Greek people of “plans to criminalize and suppress the struggle of farmers,” and underscores that this is the aim and purpose of the request of the Supreme Court prosecutor Efterpi Kotzamani for the implementation of the flagrante delicto procedure.
