In a grim reminder of the challenges faced on the Greek island of Lesvos, the Justice ministry announced on Wednesday that it will set up a forensics service on the island to respond to the increasing needs that emerged due to the jump in refugee and migrant flows in the past year.
According to a ministry statement, the large number of autopsies until now have been performed by the only specialist at Lesvos’ hospital and “a timely response to modern forensic needs and humanitarian treatment of pain generated by the loss of life” requires immediate action.
