Farmers Stand Firm; New and Tougher Blockades Include Banks and Airports (video)

Greek Farmers
Even though PM Alexis Tsipras has opened the door for an open dialogue as soon as he returns from Brussels, farmers insist on their roadblocks and take tougher actions.
Farmers have been divided in sides, between those who wish to speak with the government and those who insist on their roadblocks as a mean of pressure towards a dialogue with no basic foundation. However, tractors and farmers remain on the blockade fronts causing general paralysis on highways and customs.
In addition, today in several areas, farmers decided on blocking banks and IRS buildings and to remain in the buildings until the end of the shift.
“We’ve blocked the entrances with tractors and banners, whereas more than 100 farmers and stock-breeders are participating in the protest,” said at AMA-MPA, the coordinator of the Moudania-Chalkidiki bloackade, Vangelis Misailides.
Farmers from Therme-Thessaloniki, are also proceeding with blocking the national airport “Makedonia” in Thessaloniki, as of Wednesday noon.
Angelos Tsartsaflis, member of the coordinating committee of the airport blockades told ANA-MPE that “at two o’clock in the afternoon we are expecting more than 25 tractors from the bridge of Therme and as of three o’ clock in the afternoon and until nine o’clock at night we will block the “Makedonia” (airport), sending our clear message that not only are we not tired, but we are willing to intensify even more our actions.” However, he made clear that there is no need for worrying for those who want to travel, as there will be detour roads.
Anti-Road Block in the Hellenic-Bulgarian Borders
In the meantime, the Hellenic-Bulgarian borders have been blocked in the are of Ormenio since eight o’clock this morning, by Bulgarian truck drivers.
Speaking to ANA-MPA, the president of the Evros Farmers’ Federation, Giannis Margaritides, mentioned that it appears to be a form of protest by the Bulgarian truck drivers against the farmers’ roadblocks in Evros.
