ea49a6716d8a378f07f083a46df752a7The number of deaths caused by the deadly N1H1 influenza virus in Greece has reached an alarming 81, almost double compared to last week’s number.
The predictions of specialist doctors have been confirmed as the epidemic this year is far more deadly than the previous influenza season.
Until Friday, 293 admissions to Intensive Care Units due to complications from influenza were recorded, when in the 2014-2015 flu season a total of 248 serious cases has been reported, of which 233 were hospitalized in ICU.
This year, the pandemic influenza A (H1N1) strain seems to be more complex and it affects not only people who belong to high-risk groups for severe illnesses but to younger people and otherwise healthy individuals as well.
It is indicative that until Thursday, 19 children were taken to ICU and five of them died, while the total deaths in the season have reached 81. On Friday, a total of 120 people were receiving treatment at ICU.
According to the Hellenic Center for Disease Control & Prevention Center (KEELPNO), high-risk groups for complications caused by influenza are persons over 60 years old, patients with chronic lung diseases, cardiac diseases, immunosuppression, metabolic diseases, kidney diseases, neuromuscular diseases, pregnant and lactating women, as well as obese persons.
