Around twenty young actors from Venezuela are part of a theater group, called Mythological Hybris, which explores ancient Greek mythology and psychology. The group was created in 1996 and is directed by José Enrique “Chely” Escalona.

The company is “the result of a syncretism between my two great passions: Greek mythology and psychology,” Escalona said to Global Voices. The Venezuelan director holds a degree in psychology from Caracas’ Universidad Católica Andrés Bello. However, his passion for the Hellenic culture came at the early age of 12 years old.

All the plays performed by the theatrical group are created by Escalona and are centered on human psychology. “I’m blending theater with the analytical psychology of the Swiss Carl Gustav Jung, who talks a lot about archetypes and studied Greek mythology,” Escalona explained in his interview with the international network.

At the moment the group is rehearsing “The Pleiades,” a play that is focused on the place where Hýbris was born, in the town of Caraballeda. Through his work, Escalona is trying to help the young actors break free from the world of modern technology that forces them to become isolated. He wants to push the young Venezuelans to study and prepare for each production.
