Riot Police Clash with Protesting Farmers in Thessaloniki

thessaloniki-epeisodia-1070_0Thousands of Greek farmers in Thessaloniki who were protesting against the Syriza-led government’s plans for pension reform experienced police brutality under Greece’s first ever leftist government in the postwar era.
Farmers were confronted by the notorious riot squad known as MAT as the latter used tear gas to break up the protests that took place in anticipation of a visit by Agricultural Development and Food Minister Vangelis Apostolou to Agrotica, an international exhibition for agricultural machinery, equipment and material.
Minister Apostolou has become a hated figure among Greek farmers, which is why local authorities of Greater Thessaloniki decided that it would be best if Apostolou did not show up at the Agrotica Exhibition.
