Refugees Remain Stranded in Greece as FYROM Closes Border

eidomeniAbout 350 refugees waiting to cross to central Europe are stranded in northern Greece as Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) has temporarily shut its borders.
There are already seven buses with 350 people on board waiting for permission from FYROM authorities to cross. The Balkan country has closed down the crossing point closed down since Tuesday afternoon.
The refugees are Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria nationals waiting in the buffer zone between Greece and FYROM near the Idomeni village.
According to Greek police, the buses are parked at a bus station. Greek authorities have shut down a refugee camp near Idomeni. Doctors Without Borders and other volunteer organizations appeal to the Greek government to re-open the camp.
“The refugees wait for hours in the cold, at the gas station instead of finding refuge in the heated tents that we set up,” said Antonis Rigas from Doctors Without Borders. He also pointed out that borders through Croatia are closed for refugees.
