Greek PM Meets Newly Elected New Democracy Leader

Tsipras_MitsotakisGreek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras met for the first time today with Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the newly elected leader of Greeceā€™s main opposition party, New Democracy. The meeting took place at Maximos Mansion and lasted an hour and twenty minutes.
Prior to his meeting with the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis said he was looking forward to ā€œan honest conversationā€ and that communication among political leaders is essential even if there is disagreement between them on many issues. He also noted that political disagreement must take place in a courteous manner, something which is of course totally absent from the Greek political arena.
Speaking in front of the cameras, Alexis Tsipras congratulated Kyriakos Mitsotakis for his election as leader of the opposition party and both men agreed that cooperation is needed in order to address the country’s problems.
Whether the tone set today in front of the cameras between the Greek PM and NDā€™s new leader will continue outside Maximos remains to be seen.

Following the meeting at Maximos Mansion, the premier said through Twitter that he briefed the leader of the main opposition on all the important issues.
ā€œThe opposition must make known its position on all major reforms to social security, public administration and the negotiations with lenders,” he said. “It’s time for a new generation of politicians to overcome the petty confrontation and talk honestly about the great problems facing the country,ā€ he added.
New Democracy disagrees on many issues with the government but itā€™s important to keep communication channels open, main opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on his side after the meeting.
