The election of Kyriakos Mitsotakis as leader of the New Democracy party ushers in a new era in Greek politics and can be taken as a point of departure from the populist politics of the traditional right.
ND’s leader comes across as a staunch neoliberal who is convinced that the solution to Greece’s economic problems rests with the implementation of free-market policies and doing away with the social state.
Little surprise, therefore that he has appointed two well-known free market enthusiasts as party vice-presidents, namely Kostis Chatzidakis and Adonis Georgiadis. The first has been charged with the responsibility of drafting the government program of the party and the latter with the coordination of the party’s parliamentary work.
Both Chatzidakis and Georgiadis had served as ministers under the Antonis Samaras government and were known for the pursuit of hardcore neoliberal policies and for being strong advocates of the structural adjustment program that accompanied the first and second bailout plans.
