The National Archaeological Museum is celebrating 150 years since its foundation and to mark the occasion, the museum has organized a variety of events. The photo exhibition entitled “A dream among splendid ruins. Strolling through the Athens of travelers 17th-19th century” will be part of these events.
The National Archaeological Museum in cooperation with the Herakleidon Museum will be presenting a rich exhibition on the evolution of photographic imaging of the human presence in the magnificent ruins of Athens. It was designed to provide an imaginary stroll through monumental Athens between the 17th and 19th centuries. Companions on this stroll are the European travelers who undertook the “Grand Tour” to the capital city of Hellenism and were inspired by the movement of Classicism.
The exhibition isĀ curated by photography historian Haris Giakoumis. The selected photographs highlight aspects of early urban landscape and the everyday life of city residents.
“A dream among splendid ruins. Strolling through the Athens of travelers 17th-19th century” will open on January 18 at 6pm and it will run until May 8, 2016.
