IMF Disagrees with Greek Proposal on Pension Reforms

Poul ThomsenPoul Thomsen, Director of the European Department of the International Monetary Fund, rejects the Greek proposal on security fund reforms, according to a real.gr report.
Thomsen also expressed the opinion that the first evaluation of the progress of Greece’s bailout program will not be completed before March.
According to the report that cites exclusive sources, the IMF official closely followed the meetings Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos had with his German, Dutch, Finnish, French, Italian and Portuguese counterparts the past few days in order to drum up support for Greece’s proposal on pension reforms that will be tabled in today’s (Thursday) Eurogroup meeting.
Thomsen will represent the IMF in today’s meeting of Eurozone finance ministers in Brussels. Reportedly, he is expected to remain in Europe next week as well, the week when the team of Greece’s lenders representatives will arrive in Athens to start the review of the bailout program.
According to the report, the purpose of Thomsen’s visits is to inform Greece’s European partners that the Fund rejects the proposals on pension reforms tabled by Athens. The Fund’s disagreement is central to the first evaluation and the IMF official says there is no chance that it will be completed by March.
Technocrats of the Fund, inter alia, consider that the increase in contributions by employers will have negative effects on the development of the Greek economy, and insist that there will be a fiscal gap of 2-3 billion euros in the 2016 budget.
Indicative of the negative attitude of the IMF on the issue of security funds is the fact that ultimately the head of the Greek program, Delia Velculescu, will not be arriving in Athens on Monday as originally planned. She will be preceded by a team of technocrats, and her arrival will depend on the progress of negotiations. To date, the IMF had kept silent on the security fund reforms issue.
