Tsipras and Pavlopoulos To Reportedly Skip Piraeus Theofaneia Day due to Metropolitan's Comments on Homosexuals

tsipras_peristeriThe dispute between the Greek Orthodox Church and the Greek state over the same-sex cohabitation agreement continues into the new year.
Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will reportedly skip visiting Piraeus for the annual “Theofaneia” day due to recent comments made by the Metropolitan Piraeus Serafeim on the same-sex cohabitation agreement and homosexuals, Greek media reports.
The Piraeus Metropolitan had claimed prior to the vote on the agreement in December that he would cut ties with any politician who voted in favor of the SYRIZA sponsored legislation and later called homosexuality, “unnatural” and a “crime”.
Tsipras attended the Theofaneia day celebration, which includes throwing a cross into the sea and swimmers racing to catch it, in Piraeus last year, before being elected as prime minister.
Tsipras is not the only political leader of the country that is likely to avoid Piraeus this year. Prokopis Pavlopoulos, the President of the Hellenic Republic, is also considering not going to Piraeus.
