Close to 26 Million Tourists Estimated to Have Visited Greece in 2015

2015 is likely to be a record year for tourism in Greece.
Kathimerini newspaper claims that Greek Deputy Minister of Tourism, Elena Kountoura told the newspaper during a recent interview that close to 26 million foreign visitors will have arrived in Greece in 2015, generating revenues of up to 14.5 billion euros. As Kathimerini points out, this constitutes an increase of more than four million tourists, as well as of more than one billion in euros, compared to 2014.
The numbers are quite surprising considering that Greece has been operating under capital control restrictions since late June 2015. Furthermore, political instability and uncertainty over the country’s future rose significantly over the months of the summer, particularly June and July. However, that does not seem to have affected foreign tourists looking to visit the country.
