A Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone Exploration Was Extended to 2017

EEZOn Monday, The Cabinet of Ministers approved a request by ENI-Kogas consortium for a two year extension on their exploratory activities in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and in particular in blocks 2, 3 and 9.
Speaking to the press following the Cabinet`s meeting in the Presidential residence in the Troodos mountains, Energy Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis said that the decision provides for a two year extension from February 2016 to February 2018.
He explained that the consortium thinks this time is necessary in order to re-evaluate the energy potential especially following the discovery by ENI of the Zhor gas field in Egypt`s exclusive economic zone.
Asked whether the consortium will proceed with a new type of drilling, the Minister said that there is a preliminary plan, adding that recently a group of Ministry officials traveled to Milan where the consortium presented the work that has carried out so far.
Lakkotrypis expressed hope that in January we will be able to have the first results of their re-evaluation.
In a question as to whether we should expect the drilling to start he said that according to a preliminary plan, this will take place around mid 2017. He pointed out however that this is just a preliminary plan.
