Greek Doctors Work Long Hours Without Rest in Violation of EU Law

15328130_12760721.limghandlerGreece is in violation of European Union law by letting doctors work long hours without proper rest, according to a top EU court.
A BBC news report says that ten Greek medical associations filed a complaint to the European Court of Justice. They complain that doctors work 60 to 93 hours per week without proper rest and under substantial pay cuts.
The European court ruled against Greek law. In the ruling, the court said Greek doctors “may have to work more than 24 consecutive hours and even up to 32 hours.”
The ruling says that doctors should not work more than 48 hours per week and they should be allowed proper rest time between shifts.
Greece’s National Health System is hit hard by the economic crisis, forcing the government to proceed with major budget cuts.
