New Democracy Presidency Final Election Results

meimarakis-mitsotakisThe final results of Sunday’s election for president of New Democracy were finally announced early Wednesday morning, almost three days after the event.
Chief of the electoral committee Yiannis Tragakis announced the results after midnight, amid uproar by party members who were angered by the delay. Originally the electoral committee had said that the final results would be announced on Monday afternoon.
Tragakis tried to justify the delay saying that the process was the same as that of national elections and the people involved, like representatives of the candidates, electoral committees and court official who confirmed the results.
The delay was due to the fact that the party statute dictates the results from each poll station should be sent to headquarters by fax. The antiquated article of the party statute was ridiculed in social media.
For the record, the final results are:
Vangelis Meimarakis: 39.8% (160,823 votes)
Kyriakos Mitsotakis: 28.5% (115,162 votes)
• Apostolos Tzitzikostas: 20,3% (82,028 votes)
• Adonis Georgiadis: 11,4% (46,065 votes)
Meimarakis and Mitsotakis will battle it out on January 10, as the party president must have at least 50% of the vote.
So far, Georgiadis said on the radio that he supports the Mitsotakis candidacy for the second round. Tzitzikostas has not taken sides.
