EU Migration Commissioner: No Country Can be Suspended from Schengen

avramopoulos_luxNo country can be suspended from the Schengen zone, said European Commissioner on Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos, dismissing scenarios of Greece being at risk.
However, the Schengen Agreement is under constant evaluation regarding Europe’s ability to protect its borders.
During two meetings of EU justice and interior ministers it was decided that the Schengen Agreement is not under threat, but each country must assume its responsibilities on the refugee crisis, according to Avramopoulos.
The commissioner spoke on Mega television on Saturday and stated that the end of Schengen would mean the end of the European Union as well. When asked if indeed Greece came close to be suspended from the zone for being inadequate in protecting its borders, Avramopoulos said that there was talk among some EU officials for the establishment of a “small Schengen zone.” However, he said, this could not be done under Schengen regulations.
Avramopoulos stressed that since Greece finally agreed to work with Frontex in protecting its borders, it must cooperate more closely with EU authorities to control the refugee influx in Europe.
“Frontex is a European agency, not a foreign body to interfere in the internal affairs of a country. It comes to provide expertise and staff, and we should not forget that Greeks work for Frontex as well. They work in the procedures of identifying, registering and fingerprinting refugees,” Avramopoulos said.
