U.S. Ambassador Optimistic about Greece's Future Progress at Athens Conference

us-ambassador-to-greeceU.S. Ambassador in Athens David Pearce on Monday said he was in favor of debt relief for Greece, while noting the country’s importance as an energy hub, in order to reduce dependence on Russian natural gas, and as a transit center for trade goods.
Speaking at the American-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce 26th annual “The Greek Economy Conference” on “Investment and Growth: Building a National Plan,” Pearce said that the U.S. is optimistic about the country’s future progress and remains at Greece’s side in the effort it is making.
He added that U.S. President Barack Obama has often shown support for the country’s efforts and understands the humanitarian problem created as a result of the crisis, while expecting Greece to continue efforts with the institutions representing its lenders.
He said Greece could become a conduit for Caspian gas to pass to Europe, while Greece itself will be less dependent on Russian gas by promoting internal fuel reserves, such as offshore and land drilling of hydrocarbons.
Pearce concluded by expressing his confidence that Greece is exiting the crisis and once again finding its pace toward growth and stability.
