OECD Study Reveals Greeks Have an Unhealthy Lifestyle

OECD report
According to a recent study by the OECD the average Greek smokes systemically, has anĀ  overweight child, and is in danger of being involvedĀ  in a car accident at any given time.
OECD’s latest report on Health states that Greeks have a life expectancy of 81.4 years (84 for women and 78.7 for men), which is on average about two years less than the Japanese who are first (83.4) and the Spaniards who are second (83.2).
According to the study Greek women smoke 35% more than other women residents of OECD countries. Even though Greeks might be the number one smokers they drink in moderation. Greece is ranked in countries with moderate below average drinking. The average Greek drinks 7.5 liters of alcohol per year with 8.9 being the average of the OECD report. Lithuanians for example have over 14 liters of annual alcohol consumption per adult.
Greece also holds a negative leadĀ in childhood obesity, since 44% of boys and 38%Ā ofĀ girls in Greece have excess body weight, when the average in the other OECD countries is 25% and 22% respectively. Following is the UK ( in 2nd place with 36% of children being overweight and obese), the US, New Zealand and Italy round out the top five. Indonesia on the other hand holds one of the lowest ranks with only 11% of boys and 8% of girls being overweight, followed by Poland and Iceland.
Greece is also third in rank when it comes to mortality from strokes, with 106 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. The number of road accidents in Greece is also recorded in the OECD’s latest report, since Greece is ranked fifth for the most deaths from road accidents: 10 deaths per 100,000Ā  mainly concerning men 1/3 of which involve motorcyclists.
