Greek-Australian Charged for 5-Million Dollar Fraud

melbourneGreek-Australian Tom Poursanidis was sentenced to seven years in prison after he duped an elderly man from Melbourne out of 4.92 million dollars, over the course of eight years, reported the Greek Diaspora newspaper Neos Kosmos.

The 52-year-old Greek-Australian builder, prayed on Paul Knight since 2003, managing to win his trust and convince him to give him his life savings – gathered through hard work since 1961. According to the Australian prosecutor, Poursanidis presented Knight with fake documents, convincing him that he was paying half of the expenses for the purchase and trade of second-hand vehicles.

Knight quickly was drowning in debt and borrowing even more money to repay it.

The judge who was in charge of the case gave Poursanidis a seven-year-sentence with a minimum of 4.5 years before parole. When the defendant’s lawyer asked for a lesser sentence, since Poursanidis’ parents are both gravely sick, the judge stressed that given the nature of the crime the defendant did not warrant exceptional treatment.
