Armed individuals stormed the Raddison Blu Hotel in the city of Bamako in Mali on Friday morning, holding hostage around 170 people, according to various media reports, one of those people was Greek.
Michael Skapoulis, spoke to BBC and described the attack, explaining that he was in the gym for his daily workout and was making his way to the lobby when he realized what was going on.
“I opened the door a little bit and I saw bullets on the floor. I didn’t see inside I just saw a little bit. So I closed the door, and then I walked wall to wall back in the gym again, and from the back door of the gym, which is on the side of the hotel, I walked out where it was full of police of special forces. They took me to a safe place” he said.
Skapoulis noted that he does not know what happened to other people inside the hotel as he was alone at the gym when this occurred.
The BBC reports that the hostage situation at the hotel is over after special forces raided the hotel.
Two gunmen were killed during the special forces raid, the AFP reports, citing a Malian military source.
