City of Athens Prepares for Sunday's Marathon

33rd-Athens-MarathonThe capital of Greece is preparing for Sunday’s 33rd Athens Marathon, as athletes from around the world are set to take over the streets of Athens.
This year 43,000 people have signed up to run in the various races that take place on Sunday. These competitions include the actual marathon, a 10 kilometer race, the two five kilometer races, the 1 kilometer race and the speed walking race among others. There will be two five kilometer races due to this year’s high demand. One will take place in the morning and the other in the afternoon.
The marathon race begins in the area of Marathon and ends in the center of Athens. Certain streets in the center of Athens will be closed from 5 a.m. until 7 p.m. while the duration of the marathon will also determine when certain streets open.
On Saturday, the marathon’s opening ceremony will be held in the ancient battlefield of Marathon.
