Soccer Fans Fight Outside Athens International Airport

Soccer Fans Fight Outside Athens International AirportSerbian and Croatian organized football supporters clashed outside the Athens International Airport on Thursday afternoon.
Around 60 Serbian fans attacked 30 Dinamo Zagreb fans, upon the latter group’s arrival at the airport, Kathimerini newspaper reports. Five people are being treated in the airport’s first aid facilities while another five were carried away by ambulances as a result of the fighting. Greek police have detained 38 people.
The attacks came after the UEFA Champions league match between Olympiacos and Dinamo Zagreb in Athens on Wednesday. On the same day Greek police had carried out a large-scale operation into houses, hotels and organized fan headquarters and detained 90 Croatians and Serbians, with 49 of these ultimately being arrested. Among the Serbians that were arrested were Red Star Belgrade fans.
Dinamo Zagreb’s organized fans have a close relationship with Panathinaikos‘ organized fans, while Red Star Belgrade organized fans have a close relationship with Olympiacos’ organized fans. Olympiacos and Panathinaikos are fierce rivals.
Greek police had arrested another 41 people — including 35 Serbians and six Bosnians — in the area of Tempi, Northern Thessaly, who had been seen stealing marbles and rocks from a construction site on their way to Athens to watch a football match.
