Internationally known Greek poet and singer Angelique Ionatos moved from Greece to Belgium at the age of 13, during the military junta. Later, in 1981 she set roots in Paris, where she is actively taking part in the city’s artistic life.
The French are closely following her work, while she has also traveled abroad, to Spain, Italy, Germany and Canada to perform for foreign audiences. The French Liberation paid tribute to the Greek singer who has released a total of 20 albums during her career.
“Her albums have musical coherence, depth, quality interpretation, originality and faith. They are unique,” wrote the newspaper. Ionatos can sing all genres, from classic to folk, pop and even ethnic music. She is widely known for her incomparable style, noted the Liberation on the occasion of her new album release, after a few years of silence.
Her new album is a tribute to women and includes several verses from Odysseas Elytis’ poems. In her remarkable career she has provided music for the poems of many well-known Greek poets such as Elytis, Ritsos, Palamas Sachtouris, Varnalis and Cavafy. In her albums and her concerts she always sings the verses in Greek, out of respect for the artists. In her penultimate album “Eros y muerte” she composed music for Pablo Neruda’s “Hundred love sonnets” and Kostis Palamas’ “Tomb” singing both in Spanish and Greek.
