Red Cross Raising More Money for Refugee Crisis in Greece

o-REFUGEES-INTERNATIONAL-870x418The international Non-Governmental Organization Red Cross is engaged in efforts to collect more funds to assists with the refugee crisis in Greece.
Red Cross is in the process of raising 11.6 million euros that will subsequently be used by the organization’s branch in Greece.
“Deteriorating health on the migratory route is a major concern. The chain of immunization for children is broken, people on the move are exposed to many health challenges. We have a double duty to respond to humanitarian needs and basic health needs. We need – the Red Cross and Red Crescent, governments and humanitarian partners – to maintain our efforts and respond effectively and efficiently, to save lives and protect people’s dignity,”  Elhadj As Sy, the head of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said, according to a Red Cross press release.
Sy was in Greece for a two day visit between November 2 and November 3. During his stay he met with the leaders of the Hellenic Red Cross and also visited the Elaionas camp in Athens, which hosts refugees and migrants. Red Cross volunteers are among those helping out at the camp.
The United Nations Refugee Agency estimates that 570,000 have arrived in Greece since the beginning of the year. Among these, 218,000 have arrived in the month of October alone.
The Red Cross’s press release notes that the money being raised will be used to provide a variety of services including medical relief, psychological help as well as rescue services.
