Greek Government Coalition Partner Opposes Government Sponsored Taxation on Beer

Greek_beerThe Greek government is facing an internal dispute on one of the prior actions that the Finance Ministry has drafted and the Greek parliament will vote on this upcoming Thursday.
The Independent Greeks (ANEL), the smaller half of the Greek coalition government, are opposing one of the bill’s articles. Among the various amendments and measures the legislation proposes is an increase in the consumption tax on beers produced by small-scale breweries.
The new legislation prescribes the increase of taxation on brewing companies that produce anywhere from 15,000 to 200,000 hectoliters per year. Increases in taxation would vary depending on the exact production with refineries producing between 100,000 and 200,000 hectoliters annually facing a 75% taxation rate as opposed to the existing 50% taxation rate.
On Thursday, ANEL President and Greek Minister of National Defense Panos Kammenos tweeted that taxation on brewing companies is not a required prior action and will not happen.
ANEL MPs addressed the issue in the Greek Parliament on Monday. ANEL MP Giorgos Lazaridis asked the Greek government to reconsider the increase in taxation noting that it would cause significant problems for Greek beer producers.
The president of the organization of small brewing companies in Greece, Dimitris Politopoulos, has slammed the proposed legislation and warned that it will lead to the collapse of the local beer production in Greece, as the reduced taxation rates is what helps them survive amid competition with large-scale breweries.
The proposed article on brewery taxation is one of the prior actions the parliament will have to legislate if Greece is to advance one step closer to getting two billion euros of bailout funds.
