The mysterious “1101” that many believed was a new political movement by former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis turned out to be a news portal.
In early October, a television commercial appeared announcing the formation of something new. “The 1101 are coming to change everything” was the message of the television advertisement that showed the faces of several people including Varoufakis and actor Kleon Grigoriadis.
The commercial did not specify what the 1101 are and what will they do, thereby generating a lot of speculation of what Varoufakis would do after leaving SYRIZA. Given his statements that he will create a Pan-European political movement, many believed that the 1101 are a new political entity
Yet the mystery is solved after CostaS Efimeros, owner of news website pressproject.gr announced a “movement that will change information, will change democracy.”
“The 1101 is not a political party. It is something more important. It is a movement in news media. A sector that is suffering from corruption and clientelism. The media that undermine democracy in Greece and the quality of public dialogue. The media that are the expression of the bankruptcy of the Greek political system,” Varoufakis said.
The former minister also said that the new medium will belong to those who are getting the news from it. The subscription to the new news platform is 5 euros per month.
