Greek Gov't to Prosecute Former General Secretary of Public Revenue Katerina Savvaidou

savvaidouThe Greek prosecutor against corruption filed for the criminal prosecution of former general secretary of Public Revenue Katerina Savvaidou on felony charges for infidelity against the service. Only a few days ago Savvaidou had been dismissed from her post, following the decision of the Greek cabinet.
After revising the official statement submitted by the former general secretary of Public Revenue, the prosecution was not convinced by her explanation, noting conclusive evidence of guilt for the offense of attempted infidelity.
The case concerns Savvaidou’s decision to recheck the 78 million-euro fine imposed on a Greek company, despite the fact that the auditors expressed a different opinion. Savvaidou ordered a second audit and as a result the head auditors were forced to resign from their post, applying for early retirement, since they did not agree with her opinion to reopen the case.
Meanwhile, Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos had requested Savvaidou’s resignation, by order of the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, however, she refused to submit it. A quarrel followed between the two sides, until the government decided on her expulsion.
