Prokopis Pavlopoulos Expresses Gratitude to Archbishop Demetrios of America

pavlopoulosPresident of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos met with the Archbishop Demetrios of America in Athens on Wednesday.
“It must be made clear to all our friends in the United States and our counterparts in the European Union that it is necessary that there be corrective moves so that the sacrifices do not go to waste and so that the humanitarian crisis that we are facing today stops,” Pavlopoulos said.
Pavlopoulos spoke on the sacrifices of the Greek people and added that Greeks will make it through this tough period. He further thanked the archbishop and the Greek diaspora for their support toward Greece during negotiations for a third bailout package over the summer, by persuading the United States government to support Greece.
“You did a lot during that period and you did it wholeheartedly. That is why I must publicly admit that the successful conclusion of this negotiation is partly due to you and the diaspora, who showed yet another time that during the crucial hour they are close to Greece, close to the nation, an inseparable part of Hellenism,’ he said.
Archbishop Demetrios informed the president of the diaspora’s effort to support Greece by conveying the needs of the country to the decision makers in the United States.
Pavlopoulos also addressed the ongoing refugee crisis, which has seen more than 500,000 people enter Greece in 2015, most of them coming from war-torn regions, primarily from Syria, followed by Iraq and Afghanistan. He asked the Archbishop to convey to the Greek diaspora in the United States as well as the whole country that they must act to stop the war.
