Greek Public Revenue Secretary Refuses to Resign Over Misdemeanor Charges

savvaidouGeneral Secreatary for Public Revenue Katerina Savvaidou refuses to resign despite the fact that Maximos Mansion is urging her to resign on ethics grounds.
Sources close to Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras express the government’s concerns over Savvaidou’s ability to perform her duties with integrity and transparency. At the same time, they say that Maximos Mansion does not intend to start a legal battle with Savvaidou.
The General Secretary responded to allegations saying that there are no legal grounds for her prosecution and all her actions were within the law. Therefore she refuses to resign.
Savvaidou appeared before public prosecutors I. Dragatsis and A. Triantafyllou to speak in her defense. She is facing misdemeanor charges for allegedly extending beyond the legal deadline the time granted to TV stations to pay a 20 percent tax on advertisements.
The sources say that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras urged Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos to ask Savvaidou to facilitate the government’s work and resign. Nevertheless, Savvaidou is adamant to remain in her post.
