The Cold War thriller “Bridge of Spies” was released on October 4th to an overwhelmingly positive response from critics (as the movie holds a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), and most renowned film critics have been especially stunned by Tom Hanks‘ marvelous lead performance.

Directed by Steven Spielberg, “Bridge of Spies” follows Tom Hanks’ character, insurance lawyer James B. Donovan, who is thrown way out of his comfort zone when he is forced to defend Soviet spy Colonel Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance).

This job leads him into darker territory, as he ends up trying to negotiate the exchange of a US military pilot hostage for the Soviet Abel.

The film deftly veers between a smart courtroom drama and a Cold War thriller, and Hanks gives the performance of a lifetime as a man trying to stick to his ideals while being thrown in over his head into a complex international political stage.

Joel and Ethan Coen had a hand in polishing the script, which was written by Matt Charman, and the film was written to parallel problems and situations in the present-day United States during the war on terror.
