Greek Justice Min: No Statute of Limitations on Lagarde List

Greek Justice Minister Nikos Paraskevopoulos said that the statute of limitations will not apply on the list of suspected tax evaders who have accounts in foreign banks.
“The statute of limitations will not apply on the Lagarde List. There is no time limit in judicial procedures. All crimes will be investigated one by one,” Paraskevopoulos stated during a parliamentary session on Tuesday.
The justice minister answered questions regarding rumors that criminal liability of the persons involved in the list will expire at the end of 2015.
The Lagarde List consists of some 2,000 Greek citizens who have large amounts of money in foreign bank accounts and are suspected of money laundering and tax evasion. The list was given to the Greek government in 2010 by current Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde.
Paraskevopoulos made the above statement during the discussion of the new amendments regarding tax evasion. “The new bill will help in implementing reforms and at the same time will aid in tackling tax evasion,” he said.
The justice minister said that the new bill will include severe penalties for major tax evaders, those responsible for minor tax offenses will be punished with administrative sanctions.
“With this bill, the amount of money involved will determine if the tax offense is considered a misdemeanor or a felony and it is clarified to the citizen if there is a crime that will lead to the criminal court or a misdemeanor that will only bring administrative sanctions,” Paraskevopoulos said.
