The Greeks, who were unable to secure a victory in the previous nine qualifying games having scored just three goals, gave a spirited display against the Hungarians. The defeat for Hungary means that they will have to contest for a spot in this summer’s tournament via the play off round, which includes the eight teams that finished third in their respective groups.
Sunday’s game provides hope for the future of the Greek national team which seeks to rebuild, following its failure in these qualifiers.
Greece will also have to look for a new manager, current manager Kostas Tsanas is the interim coach. The team’s next major challenge is the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, set to begin in the fall of 2016.
