Turkey Says 3 Million More Refugees Could Flee from Syria

metanastes-eksegersi-mutiliniTurkey is warning the European Union that 3 million more refugees could flee war-torn Syria and cross to Europe adding to the already huge influx.

Currently, there are about 2 million refugees from Syria in Turkey. Also, an estimated 400,000 entered the EU via Greece this year, mostly with overcrowded, rickety boats, overwhelming border and coast guards and reception facilities.

According to an AP report, EU Council President Donald Tusk told lawmakers Tuesday that “according to Turkish estimates, another 3 million potential refugees may come from Aleppo and its neighborhood,” adding that “today millions of potential refugees and migrants are dreaming about Europe.”

However, Tusk said, “the world around us does not intend to help Europe,” criticizing some countries that “look with satisfaction at our troubles.”

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann is visiting Greece and along with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras are due to visit the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos to view first-hand the impact of the refugee crisis and tour the facilities set up to handle the new arrivals.

Hundreds, even thousands, of asylum seekers are arriving on Lesvos on a daily basis due to its proximity to the Turkish coastline.
