Austrian and Greek Leaders to Partner in Refugee Crisis

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann will meet with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras at the East Aegean Greek island of Lesvos on Tuesday in the context of the ongoing refugee crisis.
“They will visit together the first reception and refugee identification facilities, while they will also discuss further cooperation between the two countries in the management of the of the refugee influx issue, within the framework of the European Union’s policy,” a statement by the Greek government notes.
The two countries are on the opposite ends of the refugee crisis, as Greece is an entry point while Austria is one of the destinations for refugees seeking asylum.
The United Nations had reported on Friday that seaborne refugee and migrant arrivals in Greece during 2015 are expected to hit the 400,000 mark soon. Lesvos is among the primary hubs of migrant and refugee entries in Greece, with thousands crossing from Turkey to the Greek island each day.
It is important to note that less than a week ago, Reuters had reported that Faymann claimed that 90% of the more than 167,000 migrants that have entered Austria in 2015 have continued their journey to neighbouring Germany, a country that has received the vast majority of asylum applications.
