Greek PM Tsipras to Speak at UN; Meet with President Obama

tsiprasAlexis Tsipras will make his first visit to the United States as prime minister of Greece on September 26th to participate in the 70th meeting of the UN’s General Assembly, where he will address the assembly on October 1st, it was announced on Friday.
On the sidelines of the UN general assembly, Tsipras will meet with counterparts from Cyprus, Egypt, Brazil, Equador, Palestine and Turkey. He will also meet with the US Secretary of State John Kerry and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. A meeting with US President Barack Obama is also scheduled during the UN assembly.
Greek PM Tsipras will also participate at the Clinton Global Initiative 2015 Annual Meeting at the “Post-2015 Development Agenda” forum and on another panel titled “Strengthening cooperation on migration and refugee movements under the new development” on September 30.
According to a government official who accompanies the Greek PM in New York, the primary focus of Tsipras’ agenda is to convince the international community to accept a Greek debt restructuring.
PM Tsipras is also scheduled to meet His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio and representatives of diaspora organisations. The Greek PM is expected to return to Greece on October 2nd.
